Just bought a 98 Audi A6 Quattro love the car, has everything iv wanted and is my first audi and i plan on doing the repairs myself since i am mechanically inclined to do so, So since this is my first Audi How can you tell if the timing belt needs to be replaced, It has 148K I'm not sure if it was done at 100K or at the 60K mark or done before it was traded in, I want to take my timing belt cover off, But i was reading in forums you need to remove your front bumper radiator headlight assembly etc...
Can anyone tell me how i can take a peek like a 10-20 min job without having to spend 4 hours taking the front off? I just don't want to spend a couple grand fixing the car if the timing belt is ready to pop,
Iv also seen a timing chain kit for a replacement of the timing belt...Seems like it would save the expense in the timing belt etc...

You can't tell by looking at it. See if the car came with service records or know where it usually get serviced. The shop may have records in file.

I have a 98' Audi A6 Quattro and was wondering if I could replace the lug nuts on the car with something nicer. The reason is that the stupid lug nut covers that are "plastic" need to be taken off with a special tool and if a moron mechanic cracks one of them then your rusty lug nut is exposed. It's so hard to try to find these lug nut caps online and I think they suck.

spray paint your lug nuts. it will look nice, and the plastic caps are going to be stored for safe keeping.

If you're a TT man, you won't cope the hugeness of the A6. The A4 is much more agile in cornering and acceleration, not with the sacrifice of much of ride comfort comparing to A6. Then the A6 is an exec sedan, way in a different league, suited to middle-aged execs. The A4 quattro with 3.2 V6 FSI and dual-clutch S-tronic is entirely a different animal.

have found out that the washers on my Audi TT for the headlights work but not for the windshield. Is there a certain sequence I have to perform in order to switch between the two washers or am I just lacking washer fluid?

I am just trying to get an idea of the range.. I know it is expensive and I have been going to a repair shop that specializes in foreign vehicles but I feel he has been doing shoddy work.. need to find a new shop but want to know a good range before walking in.. thanks..

Thermostats are pretty easy to replace yourself. how do you know it is the thermostat? If you took it to a shop, I would expect to pay less than 0 bucks.

i noticed the coolant is starting to get lighter like its goin bad because if it was good it would be very pinkish and inside i saw some dirt in it and i was wondering if i did a coolant flush n replacement will it clog up anything or not? my car has 104,000 miles on it and i dont know when the coolant was last replaced!

A coolant flush will not hurt since you do not know when it was last done. If anything keeping the old coolant is going to clog up the works.

great cars! I love mine, and no real problems. sometimes the window engines get to breaking over time, causing your windows to not close or open on command, and they are more expensive to fix, but if you have a mechanic in the family ( I have 3) it wont be more expensive at all. parts are expensive though.

It is a 1k watt amp, I've installed many subs in jeeps,volvos, hondas, just not an Audi. I've heard there is a weird thing you have to do with its amps. Can someone please link a tutorial on how to add speakers or subs to this car. If it is the basic set up wiring where you have the ground and a cable from battery to amp then that is okay. I just want to know if its more complicated then most cars. THANK YOU

dude, i have a 2004 audi a4 3.0 and it is a basic installation i have 3 10in jl audio w6 powered by a 1000w alpine amp(the new ones) and 4 mbquart on all doors separate tweeter another alpine amp 150x4 kenwood receiver w navigation dvd and touch screen, it sound nice. i installed the whole thing myself. i even got two monitors on headrest. optima battery
